battlestar galactica season 1 2005.286
warning probably contains some spoilers and what not, so if you haven’t seen the show and you plan to, stay away from this post
well i’ll be honest first of all, i was late to the game, i missed the mini-series, so to be a more fair and objective review i chose to wait til i had the dvd box set and could evaluate the whole thing is a single entity. i received the box set last week and i’ve finally gotten around to finishing the whole first series plus the mini-series.
ok the show is absolutely amazing, it’s very dramatic, it’s got great effects, it’s got some truly great acting, and it’s got the most through consistency i’ve ever seen in a show, it’s truly amazing how much hard work had to of gone into this show.
anyways it’s about time i actually wrote something meaningful about the show so let’s start with the mini-series, after having watching most of season one and all of season two i have to say that the mini-series was a huge letdown, the mini-series showed a lack of budget and it was very drawn out, the kicker about this is that these are two problems that the show doesn’t have, if anything the show looks like it’s the biggest budget show sci-fi has, and it’s episodes are always packed pretty tight. but back to the mini-series, it does do a very good job of setting up how everything got the way it is with the cylons and the fleet and how the colonies ended up in the condition that they are in now, it even does a pretty good job of fleshing out the characters, although some of them would not get much attention until the show.
so probably at this point you’re asking if i’m ever going to get to talking about the fraking show and finally i’m getting around to it. the show starts out with an amazing episode (“33″), where the cylons are launching an attack every 33 minutes against the the remnants of the fleet, the fleet keep narrowly escaping with their faster than light drives (dubbed “FTL Drives”),
until a ship gets left behind and then reappears but ignores all orders, so he crew of the galactica are forced to make a tough decision. this episode sets the season up well, the show is full of hard decisions that are hard to take. the season is very dark and realistic, hard calls have to be made, for the better of the whole, also these are deeply flawed people from commander adoma’s attachment to his people at the high cost, to tigh’s drinking problem and then later the problem with his manipulative and bad influence of a wife, to starbucks, well starbuck has a lot of bad traits, the one that rear’s it’s head most often is she doesn’t respect authority, boomer’s… well boomer’s a cyclon but she only kind of knows it, so she’s always trying to come to terms with it, capt adoma (apollo) is trying to find his place between his father the commander of the fleet and the president of the colonies, dr baltar is more than a little crazy he sees visions of a number 6 model everywhere he goes and she even manipulates him constantly, and i could go on and on, this is a fine example how good the characters are in battlestar galactica, well if anybody is actually still reading this point i’m going to make one more point then tell you to go buy this bargin of a boxset yourself, the music, the music in BSG is some of the best instrumental music i’ve ever heard period, especially for a television show.
